social media

Dear Class:  Please list your use of social media for one complete 24 hour period.  Then comment on your usage.

  1. The most use of social media that I use is mainly on my personal laptop. Since I still have a standard flip phone "dumb phone," as they call it, I don't normally use my phone much unless I am receiving/sending phone calls. And that could be all throughout the day since I carry it around with me most of the time. I also have a personal laptop that I spend quite some time on during my day. Since, like I said before I have a flip phone so the only contact I have with the internet is my laptop. I use my laptop all throughout the day to check email, and various other updates, but mainly I surf the web most of the time reading the news/ what have you.

  2. For the most part I make it a point not to use social media, although, I do use the facebook messenger app to communicate with my friends through a group chat and in the last 24 I used snapchat sparingly. In large part I try to boycott social media. I like to keep my private life private and I don't really care to keep tabs on other peoples lives. It seems to me that every time you post something on any sort of social media site it comes back to bite you. Whether you post something in an altered state of mind due to alcohol or emotional distress you say something you don't mean or somebody takes what you say out of context. To me I just don't believe it's worth the hassle and personally I can find better things to do with my time. I hope don't offend anyone, that is just my personal opinion on social media.

  3. I use quite a bit of social media during a 24 hour period. I mostly use Facebook and Snapchat, but I also have a twitter and I do find myself on pinterest from time to time. I mostly use Facebook and Pinterest to find crafty videos or recipes. There are very few people that I keep up on because what they post on social media doesn't really matter to me. I also don't post a whole lot on Facebook, I might share a funny video or something related to my major with a few of my friends, but for the most part I just do a quick scroll and exit the app. Especially with the election drawing nearer and other social issues, I have been trying to avoid paying attention to too many posts on Facebook because of the repetitiveness of it all. I think social media has many benefits, but I also think that way too many people get attached to it to the point that they are constantly checking and posting.

  4. I find that in a 24 hour period I use social Media quite often. I especially use snapchat and facebook. I also use instagram and twitter from time to time, but it is mostly whenever I get board. I have made it a point not to use my phone for any reason in class because I will always "quickly" look at them and then its 10-15mins later. The one place I am never on social media is at work. I'm to busy and that's the mindset I use during homework, (I'm to busy for it).

  5. After observing myself for 24 hours, I use social media quite frequent. I found myself checking Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook periodically throughout the day. Social media seems to be a quick and easy way to stay informed with other people's lives. It sure does have its benefits, but I find myself wasting a lot of my downtime searching the internet. I truly believe social media is one of my biggest distractors I have in my life due to having a smart phone and it being at the tip of my fingers.

  6. I do not have ANY social media. I have been married for 1 1/2 years and in a relationship for 3 years in which social media was never involved so I spend no time with this type of entertainment. However, because this doesn't apply to me I paid attention to how often I am generally on my phone throughout the day and it pretty much consumes my entire day. I am constantly checking for text messages and browsing the internet looking at world news, and many different things throughout the day. My phone is dead most of the day from constantly playing games, and browsing the internet.

  7. Within the past 24 hours I have found myself using Instagram the most. I am really into photography and less into reading. I generally find myself on Instagram the most because it is more photo oriented as opposed to Facebook where it is more status oriented. I am typically always looking at everyone's posted snapchats-but not usually sending them out. I love to see what everyone is doing. I also use Pinterest a lot because I love to keep my mind occupied with ways I could become more creative. One thing I find that I hate about myself is the amount of time I get sucked into social media. It's such an addiction that a lot of us tend to fall into. We open our phones to look at a notification-and all of sudden an hour goes by because we started looking at the news feed. I like to logoff of Facebook so I don't get the little notification bubbles on my Iphone-then I'm not so tempted to open up Facebook.

  8. I only use one form of social media, twitter. I use it daily and enjoy the interaction and news that comes with it. It depends on the day on how much I use it. If it is a rainy, indoor type of day, I go on it more. If I am busy and the weather is nice, then I tend to go on it less. Yesterday was a great day; busy and sunny; so I avoided the twitter for the most part. Here is my chart:

7am Tuesday to 11am: None, schooling prohibits.
At 11am, a five minute check.
Back to school from 11:05 to 5pm, no usage.
From 5 to 5:30pm, check the twitter and interact a bit.
5:30 to 8:45, grocery shopping, enjoying outdoors, so no usage.
9pm to 11pm, watching tv, so I am tweeting and interacting away.
11pm to Midnight, showering, getting ready for bed, no usage.
12am to 12:30am, bedtime check of twitter.
    12:30 to 6:45am, none, sleeping.
6:45 to 7am Wednesday, morning check.

  9. After observing myself for 24 hours i have noticed i use social media about 50/50. I work as a nanny so therefore when the children are sleeping i watch youtube videos, check twitter, look at the news, and log into the schools website and Facebook. I have made an effort to not use my cell phone when i am at home, because i like to focus on cleaning, doing homework, working out and my man. When the weather is nice out i tend to not even use my cell phone unless its for my biking or running app ( to track how i am doing). Like i have stated i try to not use it when i am home if i don't need it, because i feel like social media is taking over our minds; yes i believe we get informed about stuff easier and its convient but i also believe more people are "not in the moment" when they are worried about social media and not whats happening in life in front of them.

    Tuesday 9/6:
4:40am - 8:00am No Tv, Making husband breakfast and getting ready for work
8:00-10:00am Checked Facebook for 10 minutes
10:00-12:00pm Nothing, Taking care of the children i nanny
12:00-2:00pm Computer ( Homework, Youtube, Facebook)
2:00-4:00pm Checking emails for about 10 minutes in that time frame
4:00-7:00pm Nothing, cooking dinner and homework
7:00-9:00pm 5-30 minutes on and off checking Facebook
    9:00-4:40am Nothing, sleeping.

  10. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook(barely), Snapchat, Discussion boards, Email.

On the typical morning I wake up and instantly grab my phone to check my both of my emails. First of all I check my school email to see if I have any announcements and then I check my personal email. I then make my breakfast and use mostly Instagram. This is my favorite social media because its easy to use and I don't like reading long posts. Throughout the day, I'm constantly checking Instagram and Snapchatting with my girlfriend and a few other people. I check Facebook maybe once or twice just to see what my family is up to and Twitter a couple times as well just to see what's up. I don't particularly use these two very much because I really don't like typing out long passages or reading them. I'm also on a discussion board for at least an hour per day as I have 3 classes this semester that use discussion boards as homework and they all require pretty thoughtful responses. So, I would say I spend quite a bit of time on social media; probably about 3-4 hours per day, maybe more. I do refrain from using social media when I'm in class so that cuts down on my usage a little bit.

  11. In a 24 hour period I notice myself using Facebook most of the time. When I wake up in the morning I usually don't use it until I have everything else that needs done accomplished. I also use Instagram sometimes also. I use Facebook for many different reasons. One reason is to see whats going on in the outside world. There is always people posting what is going on or what they are doing. For example if there is breaking news somewhere I can go on Facebook and usually find it withing minutes. There is also a ton different pages to follow such as hunting pages or a news page. Seeing these pages can keep you up on the latest technology with hunting and or news. Instagram is more of a social media site that shows tons of images. Some are of your friends and others can be things like new trucks or cars. So Facebook and Instagram are the main two social media sites that I use and Facebook is definitely more informational than Instagram. Discussion boards for class is another way to interact with other students and professors. I only use discussion boards when I am in class for the semester.

  12. My social media use, usually starts when I get up around seven each morning. Before I get up, I lay in bed for a while just to catch up on what I missed in the world. Most frequently in the morning I check my CNN news and twitter app. I rely on CNN to inform me about the latest news stories and the Twitter app to read all of the interesting commentary about what's happening in the news. After scrolling through my twitter feed, I get up to start my day. On most days, I refrain from social media use from 8 am to 2 pm while I am in class. There are times in between classes or during lunch when I check my Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. After classes, I avoid using social media again for a few hours while I'm doing homework. In fact, I prefer to place my phone on the Do Not Disturb setting. This is to keep social media notifications from being a distracton. When I get home around 6 pm everyday, the first type of media I use isn't necessarily social media, it's watching television. I like to tune into a few of my favorite shows before I prepare to go to bed. I try to get in bed by 11 pm every night, but because I'm scrolling and reading on my phone, I don't go to sleep right away. I go thorugh facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and check to see if I have any new connections on LinkedIn. That pretty much sums up a typical day of social media use for me. Throughout one day I frequently use social media. I know that many people ( mostly older generations) criticize how much millennials utilize social media. While some people do take it to an extreme, I think that my social media use is normal. If I'm not by a television or a radio, my social media apps are my quickest source of finding out the news.

  13. I haven't been on social media a lot lately. I just became active on Facebook again today after taking time away from it. I actively use Facebook, Pinterest, and Snapchat. I typically don't check my social media until I am at UT in the morning, working in the library. Before my classes, I sometimes take out my phone and go through my Snapchat and Pinterest. After I get home, I often leave my Facebook open in a tab on my computer as I work on assignments. I noticed my social media use has decreased dramatically, and I don't consistently keep up with my profiles very much. I don't exactly have specific times where I spend time on social media, I instead check on my profiles throughout the day when I get the chance. I spend the most time on Facebook, though. I use it to keep up with upcoming events and to keep up with my friends. I check Snapchat here and there, but I usually look at my friend's "stories" and do not send many snaps myself. Pinterest is an app that I either can spend an hour on or spend five minutes on. I sometimes either scroll through my feed, pin a post or two, and exit out of the app or spend a hour or so pinning many pins. My social media usage changes by day, and I can't give a consistent schedule for my usage.

  15. I am not involved much into social media, except facebook. Facebook might be old school for some of us but not for me. Facebook really keeps me updated about most of the things going around me and is like a newspaper and comic book for me. I check my facebook almost every hour via my smart phone, it keeps me entertained and updated. I do have a twitter and snapchat account, but I really not much into writing and taking pictures so I use them like once in a blue moon. I also get to know what my high school friends are doing or what places they have moved to as they update their status. My Facebook account might always show me active because my its always on via my smart phone but honestly I don't use it that often.

  16. I find myself using social media not as much for myself, but for pages I manage. I play in a regional touring band and have to keep up in real time on any interactions, emails, and social media updates with the group.
    Wednesday 9/7
9am: Email check, Facebook analytics, basic updates = 15 minutes
9:45ish: replied to two emails and a Facebook comment = 1 minute
    11am: posted instagram update = 2 minutes
    11:15: personal snapchat usage = 1 minute
    11:40ish: personal snapchat usage = 1 minute
    12pm: Facebook check = 5 minutes
    1:15ish: replied to 2 emails = 10 minutes
    2pm: website upkeep = 10 minutes
    4:30pm: website content creation = 20 minutes
    6pm: social media checks = 5 minutes
    7:15pm: sent publisher email = 7 minutes
    9pm: twitter update = 1 minute
    10pm: media checks = 5 minutes
    10pm-12am: basic checks, nothing notable

I tend to use social media frequently throughout the day, but not as much in the general sense of keeping up with friends. Most social media usage for me is business related, i.e. talking with promoters, reaching out to new music outlets, keeping up to date with website traffic and analytics, etc.

  17. After 24 hours I noticed I used my phone for youtube for about 1/2 hour to 1 and 1/2 hours. Then I used Xbox Live for a while. But I rarely check social media sites in fact the only two I have are Snapchat and Instagram which I rarely use.

  18. Yesterday 9/9/16 I spent about 6 hours lurking on Reddit. I normally do not use social media because I do not like to share much about myself with others. I have a Facebook but I check it weekly at most just to remove the notification icon form the app on my phone. I do not have a Twitter, Instagram, Snap chat...etc.

I normally would not spend more than a half hour at a time using Reddit, but it has been a while since I was on last and there are always good reads while browsing the various sub-Reddits. I kept clicking on things I found interesting or ridiculous, and got lost reading miles worth of clever comments and internet quarrels.

After staring at my computer screen for several hours straight, consuming way more media than my brain could retain, I left with a headache and a slight case of information overload. This is not my typical day; although I do have times in my life when I binge on social media, on an average day I consume less than a half hour of it.

  20. On a regular basis, I am on social media constantly on a communicational basis. I studied abroad last year and I became very close to the friends I made there. We typically use Snapchat, Facebook, and a messaging app called LINE to keep in touch. When I returned to Toledo, I also realized that many of my friends had already graduated so I spend more time talking to the group of friends that I met in Japan than I do with people that attend the University. I have Tumblr, but I only use it about once every few months. I don't have Instagram nor Twitter. Yesterday I spent about a half hour on Facebook to check what my friends and family had been up to. I used Snapchat and the Facebook Messanger app regularly throughout the day as a form of communication rather than browsing and I Skyped four of my friends for about three hours last night, this is the first time I ever used Skype for more than 40 minutes. Out of habit, I don't normally use my iPhone messages unless it's in correspondence with family.

  21. I do not use many forms of social media, mainly because one is all you need. Anything more you are just repeating yourself and spending more time on social media then being social. I used Facebook for 1.5 hrs during my 24 hr test. I used email for work and school, but do not use it for personal fun or communication. I don't use twitter or instagram because it has its uses, but Facebook covers more ground in a all inclusive app. It is also more enjoyable by use of phone or computer where the other apps including Snapchat are mostly for phone use only.

  22. In the span of twenty four hours I find myself using my email for a total of a few hours throughout the day, when my day comes to and end I find myself using Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat for about an hour before I go to sleep.

  23. In 24 hours I noticed myself constantly using my phone and my laptop for social media. It's just an active part of my daily life and I don't even notice it. I mainly use Facebook and Snapchat but I also use other apps such as Instagram, Yik Yak, and those kinds of apps. I also tend to use the Facebook Messenger app often because that is where I mainly talk to many people daily.

  24. Within the last 24 hours I have used Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I mainly use social media to keep in touch with family and friends. I try not to allow social media to take control over my life and have actually went for 2 days without using any of these apps.

  25. I do not use social media very often. The two social media platforms I use are Instagram and Snapchat. I also have a Facebook account but have not checked it in a few months.

  26. The only social media I use is Facebook. I check it Once for about 20 minutes when I get home from work at around 5:30 pm and then occasionally when I am trying to go to sleep at night for around 30 minutes. If Pinterest counts as a social media then I also scroll through that while I am waiting for class to start or also when I am trying to go to sleep.

  27. The social media I typically use within one complete 24 hour period are: Facebook, Twitter, and SnapChat. Usually when I am on my computer I always have a tab open for Facebook and TweetDeck (which I use for Twitter as I have multiple accounts, one personal and one for my business that I am trying to build). Typically, I am logged into all social media on an average of 7 hours (that is for all social media I have listed above).

  28. I currently am taking a break from social media so in the last 24 hours, I have not used any.

  29. I use social media quite a bit throughout the day... (and more frequently on the weekends). In the past 24 hours the social media platform I used the most was Snapchat. Snapchat is my favorite form of social media. I mainly only Snapchat my boyfriend and my best friend; and occasionally send snaps to about 10 others. Other social medias I use are Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Facebook I really only post pictures of my son; maybe once a week (twice a week tops). I do check Facebook daily, up to 5-6 times if I'm really bored. Instagram I post on my personal one about 3-4 times a week. Sometimes more if we go on a trip somewhere. I also run an Instagram account for my son, who reps clothes for a few amazon and Etsy shops. I check Instagram once or twice a day. Twitter I use in sprits... I posted one tweet in the past 24 hours; before that I hadn't posted in 10 days. I don't get on twitter much at all to read others posts, maybe a few times a week.

  30. The social media site I use the most is twitter. I go on there all the time just to get some entertainment and to get the most up to date news in the world today. I do not use social media from 2-6 because during that time I have meetings and practice. I also use snap-chat at different times throughout the day but not often and I rarely use Facebook.

  32. The social media site that I find myself using the most is Twitter. I go on twitter to check different news stories to keep up with whatever is going on in the world. I did catch myself going onto my social media accounts a lot during the day. I use social media to keep up with news and also our practice schedules. I am a cheerleader here and we have a Facebook page that people post things on a lot about different practices and appearances that we have to go to. I unfortunately get on my phone a lot during certain classes of mine. Some are bigger classes so the professor cannot really enforce people to stay off their phones. I am however off my phone during practice times from 7-9:30 at night during the week days. But I mainly get on social media due to the news and anything that might spark my interest.

  33. The social media outlet that I use most is Facebook because it is the most accessible and I have the most amount of friends on facebook. I do not use twitter and I deleted instagram a while ago. I like snapchat but it can get boring if you have watched all of the stories already
